NSMBA and Cleveland NAACP Call for Resignation of Monitor Hassan Aden

    NSMBA Members:

On June 23, 2021, NSMBA Second Vice President Brandon Brown, along with the Cleveland NAACP, Black Lives Matter and other community leaders, held a press conference on the steps of City Hall to demand the resignation of Hassan Aden, lead monitor of the Cleveland Police Monitoring Team, and to express frustration, disappointment and outrage over the forced resignation of Professor Ayesha Bell Hardaway. Professor Hardaway was forced to resign on June 14, 2021 from the Cleveland Police Monitoring Team panel that oversees the Cleveland police department’s progress in making court-mandated changes pursuant to a consent decree the City of Cleveland entered into with the U.S. Department of Justice in 2015. Pursuant to the consent decree, the City of Cleveland agreed to a series of reforms, most prominently in the way officers use force and the Cleveland police department’s system of disciplining officers. Professor Hardway's resignation followed an appearance on WCPN in which she spoke about police violence and the need for reform across the United States.

Due to lack of response from Aden and the U.S. Department of Justice, NSMBA Second Vice President Brandon Brown, along with other community leaders, held another press conference on July 7, 2021, this time on the steps of the Carl B. Stokes United State Courthouse.
